Our Practice

This is a small practice, but one that is driven by the belief that good design, at whatever scale, makes life better for everyone, and is everyone’s right. The practice exists to deliver good design, and to interpret and promote its importance to others.

I am both architect and urban designer. As an architect I deal with the design of buildings, and also with their conversion, restoration or extension. I am a conservationist, and have a special interest and expertise in dealing with old buildings, whether or not of historic interest. As an urban designer I work at a scale larger than that of the single building. I work on area regeneration, the making of masterplans, the improvement of housing estates, the design of public spaces, and the writing of design and development briefs.

All these involve different ways of working; sometimes directly for a client, sometimes as part of an interdisciplinary team, sometimes as a consultant for a local authority. At the urban design scale, they almost always involve resident participation, in the organisation of which I have many years’ experience.

My practice extends beyond design and consultancy, and into training. Both on my own and with others, I arrange and deliver urban design training courses for local authorities, organisations and other professionals. These varied activities connect with other roles that I have: as a university teacher, as a regional representative for the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), as a member of two regional Design Review Panels, and several others.
